Presenting information in a deceptive way that results in others interpreting the information in such a way that does not reflect reality but is how you want the information to be interpreted. Spin doctors are prepared to intimidate people who don’t follow their spin. Spin doctoring is deliberating distorting the facts, manipulation, and outright lying to the public.
Spin doctors frame their statements to make them serve a purpose. And it isn’t all about what they say, either. It’s about WHO says it (trust and authority). It’s also about when and where they say it. (Social media) Why they say it (intent).
“Often associated with newspapers and politicians, to use spin is to manipulate meaning, to twist the truth for particular ends – usually with the aim of persuading readers or listeners that things are other than they are. As in idioms such as to put a ‘positive spin on something’ – or a ‘negative spin on something’ – one line of meaning is concealed, while another – at least intentionally – takes its place.”
“Spin’ is the polite word for deception. Spinners mislead by means that range from subtle omission to outright lies. Spin paints a false picture of reality, by bending facts, mischaracterizing the words of others, ignoring or denying evidence, or just ‘spinning a yarn’ – by making things up.”
Spin Doctors use several techniques to manipulate public opinions. They may:
- present fabricated information which is favourable to their position.
- Mislead, misinform and fabricate information.
- Selectively present misquotes and statements that support their position (cherry picking) even when they are aware the original statement was incorrect.
Spin doctoring is a form of propaganda, achieved through providing a biased interpretation of an event or campaigning to PERSUADE PUBLIC OPINION in favour or AGAINST an organization (like a POLICE DEPARTMENT for example).
